Our Commitment to Teaching Assistants (TAs)

The Center for Teaching Excellence is committed to supporting our graduate TAs, which include TAs who teach a course as the instructor of record, TAs who lead labs, TAs who primarily support faculty with LMS maintenance, or TAs who primarily tutor or grade. No matter your role, we are here to support academic units and individual TAs through a wide range of services.

WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING

Unless otherwise noted, TAs are invited to attend any regular workshop or training we schedule.

MICRO-CREDENTIAL IN TEACHING

We provide an asynchronous online (complete on your own time) micro-credential course to any graduate student who is actively teaching or would like to teach while at SIU. This course provides diverse advice from excellent teachers and an overview of tools that will be useful for your role as an instructor. To register for the course, click here.

INTERNATIONAL TA ORAL INTERVIEW

This is an oral interview required of all international Teaching Assistants (ITAs) at SIU. The exam is designed to assess your conversational English to ensure effective classroom communication. This is an opportunity for us to provide constructive feedback and, if necessary, offer avenues for improvement. This ensures effective communication with our diverse student body. If this interview applies to you, the graduate director of your academic program will send us your name and we will contact you with additional details. If you have been asked to take the interview and are needed to complete the interview, click here.

GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT ORIENTATION

We provide an annual orientation to assist new graduate TAs transition smoothly into their teaching roles at SIU. The orientation includes both asynchronous and synchronous elements. The asynchronous element will provide a general overview of SIU and elementary training in our learning management system (LMS) called D2L/Brightspace.

We also provide various workshops throughout the year to address online instruction, classroom instruction, and ways to incorporate technology into your teaching.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES

We offer resources to support TAs as they navigate their academic careers. We also aim to provide relevant information and training for those considering roles outside academia. Resources are primarily in the form of workshops and handouts.
