About Us
How the Center of Teaching for Excellence Supports Campus
The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is the hub for instructional support at SIU. Here are just a few things we do:
- maintain the Learning Management System (D2L Brightspace) and train instructors to deliver engaging in-person and online content.
- design classrooms with accessible, easy-to-use technology.
- offer spaces to create instructional videos and supporting material digitization for learners of all abilities.
This year, the CTE is focused on new training formats, instructional support, and technology for interactive teaching. Financial contributions from our alumni and friends enable the CTE to equip faculty with the latest tools.
Our Current Goals & Priorities
Maximizing Value Through Technology
We’re optimizing our technology portfolio to deliver greater value while reducing costs. This ensures our resources are both impactful and efficient. In the past year, we've been able to save $80,000 on annual contracts while offering new capabilities like AI detection scanning of student work and more interactive content in D2L through Creator+.
Launching the Course Merchant
In collaboration with the Office of Events and Outreach, we’ve purchased a shopping cart platform called Course Merchant to offer a seamless shopping cart experience for learners pursuing continuing education. This initiative will also generate new revenue for CTE.
Expanding Access with LinkedIn Learning
We’re piloting LinkedIn Learning with plans to make it a permanent resource, enhancing professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
Boosting Student Attendance and Engagement
We’re exploring innovative strategies to improve classroom attendance and student engagement across all learning formats.
Aligning with Student Success Initiatives
Through close collaboration with the Associate Provost for Student Success, we ensure our programs directly support student achievement, retention, and holistic development.
Enhancing Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
We’re committed to continuous improvement through faculty training, effective use of D2L tools, and data-driven strategies to meet Higher Learning Commission (HLC) standards for student success.
