Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor

Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are secure testing tools integrated with SIU’s Brightspace (D2L) learning platform. They are designed to protect the integrity of online exams by preventing students from accessing other websites, applications, or digital resources during an assessment.

LockDown Browser
LockDown Browser is a specialized web browser that locks the testing environment within Brightspace. When a quiz requires it, students must launch the exam through this browser. While the exam is active, features such as copy/paste, printing, screen capture, and switching to other programs or websites are disabled. Once the assessment is submitted, normal computer functions are restored. 

Respondus Monitor
Respondus Monitor extends the security of LockDown Browser by using a student’s webcam and microphone to record the testing session. It automatically analyzes the video to flag potential concerns for review. The tool helps instructors ensure academic honesty in fully online or remote exams, and with its minimal bandwidth, Respondus Monitor is recommended for in-person classroom course exams.

Why SIU Uses Respondus
Respondus supports academic integrity while allowing instructors to deliver flexible, online assessments. It ensures that online and in-person courses maintain the same standards of fairness and reliability. Many faculty use Respondus to reduce opportunities for cheating and to verify student identity.

Student Experience
When a quiz or exam requires Respondus, students will see a notice in Brightspace before they begin. They will be prompted to download and install the LockDown Browser (using SIU’s unique download link) and, if required, complete a short setup sequence for Monitor that includes checking the webcam, showing ID, and scanning the environment.

Accessibility and Privacy
SIU is committed to ensuring that all students can participate fully in assessments. Students who need accommodations should contact Disability Support Services prior to the exam. Respondus only records during the testing session, and videos are securely stored and reviewed solely by authorized SIU personnel when needed.
