Introduction to Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a learning philosophy that emphasizes the importance of direct experience, reflection, and active engagement. Instead of receiving information passively, learners actively engage with the subject matter, participate in hands-on activities, and reflect on their experiences.

Examples of Experiential Learning in Higher Education:

  • Internships & Practicums
  • Study Abroad Programs
  • Service-Learning & Community-Based Projects
  • Field Studies and Research / Clinicals / Performance & Exhibitions

Instructor’s Role in Experiential Learning

Instructors are key in designing and facilitating experiential learning. It is important to create hands-on activities aligned with learning objectives and also guide reflection, encourage critical thinking, provide support, promote collaboration, offer feedback, adapt to diverse learner needs, and connect theory with practice.

Integrating Experiential Learning into Your Course

Integrate experiential learning into your courses by identifying suitable course parts, matching activities with learning objectives, and determining appropriate assessment methods. Utilize existing campus resources and partnerships, like the SIU‘s Craft Shop, Touch of Nature, Research Park, and Center for International Education, to offer diverse opportunities for hands-on and real-world learning experiences. Also, consider partnering with local organizations or businesses.

  • Start Small: Begin with a single project or assignment, gradually expanding to include more experiential elements throughout your courses or program.
  • Diverse Experiences: Utilize diverse approaches like case studies, role plays, interdisciplinary seminars, collaborative projects across majors, and guest speakers to address real-world issues within and beyond the classroom.
  • Reflection: Provide learners with opportunities to reflect on direct experiences as critical reflection gives meaning to the learning experience and creates a sense of accomplishment.
